The Board of Deacons

The primary and continuing responsibility of the Board of Deacons is to shepherd the Kirkwood congregation. The Board is composed of 12 members, elected by the congregation for a three year term, whose primary responsibility is to provide congregational care to 12 – 15 families in their assigned "neighborhood". This care includes emotional support and other assistance as needed. The Deacons strive to be proactive in the lives of Kirkwood families and friends in a variety of ways including reaching out to get to know our Church and neighborhood members to provide comfort, support, friendship and Christian fellowship.

The primary activities of the deacons include:

• Providing congregational care through personal visits, phone calls, and birthday and holiday cards to neighborhood members;

• Providing congregational care after worship services through the "Deacon in the Parlor" program;

• Publishing "Deacons’ Corner" articles in the Lamplighter to highlight their activities and introduce themselves;(click here to visit our "Meet Your Deacon" page)

• Ensure ongoing communication with church elders by attending the monthly session meetings;

• Providing meals to the sick and elderly;

• Celebrating newborns with a rose on the chancel during worship, and providing the rose and a CD to the families;

• Maintaining a list of volunteer drivers who are willing to transport Congregational members as needed;

• Providing care in the case of a death of a family member or friend of Kirkwood, and working with the Women of Kirkwood and the pastor in cases where memorial services and receptions are held in the church;

• Co-leading and participating in the Prayer Rings;

• Coordinating their shepherding activities with other church organizations to enhance their joint effectiveness in providing congregational care;

• Providing the congregation with the resources as needed to address their concerns as a result of events affecting us as Christians and as a congregational family.
